And suddenly we were at: "Family Crisis - is this the right place?"... Mature professional couple with a teen suffering with depression and anxiety. We hit a critical juncture and were suddenly in the reception of Dominion. Frantically we searched reviews and were very concerned by what we were reading online - but without many options. The care, and staff, here were simply OUTSTANDING. The compassion, understanding, and integration of parents into the treatment plan was truly exceptional and most appreciated. Apparently the food was terrible (but we could bring in dinner each night) and the facility could benefit from renovation; but, we were there for the treatment and it was delivered very professionally by an excellent dedicated team and with care that produced tremendous results. A gradual emancipation process, coupled with a coordinated reintegration plan with our school was an excellent weaning that has our child back to living healthy with the tools they need to move forward successfully. We did occasionally witness very hard working staff being treated poorly by, understandably emotional, parents; they in turn did not receive concierge service but were still treated very respectfully. Bottom Line: despite the terrifying reviews I read we received excellent service from every staff member encountered including the reception officers. Most importantly our child, while not enjoying their time there, endorses the program as it gave them, and us, an opportunity to reset, then re-engage, life with personalized tools/strategies provided by qualified mental health professionals. Thank you Dominion. You are not alone...Good luck!
I don't understand the negative reviews. We have had great experiences with this hospital caring for our son. He was recently diagnosed with a mental illness and the Doctor's and therapists have been wonderful. The front desk staff is awesome and friendly and so are the nurses and staff on the residential floors. They have made a bad situation bearable with their kindness, understanding and patience. I know my son is in good hands there. Special thanks to Ranya, Courtney, Irene, and Dr. Spivack and Olele XOXO
This review is on Reflections, the unit for Eating Disorders. My daughter was in the program from mid-April to early July, 2014. She was a PHP, so we would drop her off in the morning and pick her up after dinner. It was the darkest period of our lives. She was miserable and every day, every meal was a struggle. The staff helped us get through this horrible journey. Upon discharge, they helped us establish a team of dietitian, individual therapist, general physician, and psychiatrist. We followed their advice and kept forging ahead in the fight of eating disorders. To this day, my daughter is still in solid remission (I would not say that she is totally recovered but she is doing much, much better with foods), and I attribute her recovery to Reflections. It saved my daughter's life!
It's tough to judge based on patient reviews. No one wants to be their, and chances are things got really bad and you had to go. We needed a new facility. 5 times at the same place previously, and we were getting nowhere. My child received the best care at Dominion by far. The staff is professional and no nonsense. They are not their to be a pal. They will listen and they will help. You need to meet them halfway. They kept my daughter safe. Dr. Lomax was great and offered the most proactive treatment plan in two years of trying. The therapist was wonderful as well. My child met with either one everyday. At her previous inpatient, she could be there a week before seeing anyone. We also appreciated the weekly family sessions to keep us informed of the progress and it was a great chance to visit our child. Lastly this was the first place to offer a residential treatment facility. She should have gone three admissions ago. They were very helpful in facilitating the process. There are not many in the eastern part of the US, but we found one with Dominions help. I appreciate all that Dominion did. My daughter is on a path to wellness thanks to them.
I was a patient here for 10 days in the adolescent unit. Though I wasn't "cured", it did alleviate the immediate risk, and I was able to be put on medications that could help me. I met some wonderful people and the staff was great, save for a couple exceptions, which is expected anywhere. Complete recovery is not guaranteed at any mental health facility, so that I had to teach myself, but the inpatient and PHP programs taught me valuable skills that I have taken with me nearly a year after my hospitalization. Be forewarned, the facility is chaotic, but only because there are just so many patients for the attention to be dispersed between. I am glad I was able to get help here.
This hospital saved my life. The staff are great. It was just what I needed to get myself together again. I
Amazing place, I was only there for a week and I didn't want to leave. The staff is nice and the patients are also nice. The only thing I didn't like about this place was the food. Sometimes doctors keep you there for longer than you should be. The rooms are very small and dirty, the bathrooms are covered in scary messages from past patients. Also, the therapy is nice, especially music therapy.
The inpatient workers for the Adolescent unit are the nicest bunch you'll meet in quite some time. They're a little bit touchy with how close patients are, which makes sense, but it can be a little exasperating sometimes. Types of therapy are vast, but they're not optional. The food *can* suck, but there's always other options. I'd recommend Dominion for anyone who qualifies for the Adolescent unit. Can't speak for the rest of the units.
My daughter was hospitalized twice at Dominion, and she was also treated in their partial hospital program. They saved her life. I am a mental health professional, and I have worked in many inpatient settings, and this was the best psychiatric hospital for children that I have ever seen. Ask to be treated by Dr. Spivack or Dr. Harper, even though their group charges separately. I was shocked by some of the negative reviews. Please do not reject this hospital based on the reviews. You would be missing out on a great treatment option for your child.
Hello. I've been an impatient in the Children's Unit and I had an exceptional experience myself, at Dominion Hospital. The food was great overall, the staff were mostly nice, the nurses were good, the rooms were nice and tidy, although most of my fellow peers in the unit didn't have their problems solved by their time of their departure. There was a room called 'the quiet room' where they put bad kids, I'd like to be honest, it wasn't a very good place to put them because I feel bad kids should have a chance to speak with a professional instead of being locked out like a caged animal. I did not get to go into the quiet room but I always hated hearing screams coming from there. It wasn't my place to tell the staff. The food was great and the nurses and staff make sure to feed us healthy food with all balanced nutrition. I had very low expectations for the food but I learned it tasted pretty great. They make sure we bathe and give us materials and make sure we're safe, they check our safety levels. In the hospital, I felt comfortable talking about my problems to everyone. Nobody would judge me and some of the staff were remarkable! Ms. Andrea, Ms. Katherine, and Mr. Dilante were great and helped me a lot. I don't like that they keep the adolecents and the children's unit in the same cafeteria for eating. One time a children's patient got punched in the face by a teenager. After the incedent, I didn't feel comfortable there anymore. The music therapy is great! Mr. Micheal is very talented and great at therapy! Art was amazing and I got to put my feelings on paper, I loved the teachers and the vast range of supplies I could use. Overall, Dominion solved my problems and I would recommend it. I had a good experience overall.
My daughter has received very good services from the staff at this hospital. It can be nerve wrecking when your child is receiving services and is away from home, but I feel that the hospital staff from the doctors to the nurses to the administrative staff all work to make my daughter and all patients feel comfortable. The care they provide is therapeutic to the whole family. i would recommend this facility to familes who are seeking mental health care and services.
I cannot speak for all of Dominion; however I can speak for what I know of it. I was at the reflections unit multiple times between 2016-2017, for long periods of time. I did both the partial program and the inpatient program multiple times. I loved the Reflections staff, therapists, and Director (Felicia Kolodner). Felicia and all of the staff know what they are doing and are very compassionate and caring. This place honestly saved my life. It could have been a tad cleaner, and the food wasn't great (but I was there for An eating disorder so I don't really have a valid opinion lol) but honestly I recommend this place so much to ED patients seeking treatment. So much better than Sheppard Pratt.
First of all Dr Nene was HORRIBLE. I have been there twice and each time he did not care about any of my side effects and did not listen to me at all. This past time my meds were giving my side effects that felt like I was being drugged at a bar or something. I told him this every time I saw him but he continued to say I was "handling it well" Most of the staff is rude, talks about you and your problems to other staff members. We could ask to go to our room at any point in the day and all we had to do was to say we were safe and we could VERY EASILY lie about that and go to our rooms to self harm. There was one horrible staff member who's name sounded like "Ego" and most of the people on the adolescent unit hated her. There was also two staff members who's names are Chris and Nick who helped me tremendously and talked to me whenever I needed it. They seemed like they genuinely cared about me and my health. That place also has horrible food. I do not recommend Dominion to ANYONE.
